NSW has passed another Covid-19 vaccination milestone, with more than 90 per cent of the population aged 16 and over now fully vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.

According to federal government figures released this afternoon, the state’s full vaccination coverage now stands at 90.12 per cent – making NSW the first Australian state to surpass the 90 per cent mark.

The news comes five weeks after the 70 per cent double dose mark was achieved, triggering the state’s emergence from lockdown commencing 11 October.

“We did it!” declared a NSW Health social media post this afternoon.

“90 per cent of people in NSW aged 16+ got vaxxed, thank you.”

The state’s peak health body went on to urge those who are eligible to now book their booster shots, to ensure maximum immunity and community safety.

“If you’re over 18 and had your second dose six or more months ago, book your booster dose now: https://covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au.”

A jubilant NSW Premier urged the small cohort of unvaccinated people to get their jabs, with the next milestone of 95 per cent set to trigger a further easing of restrictions.

“Every extra vaccinated person strengthens our reopening, protects the vulnerable and gets us closer to the magic 95 per cent – when even more restrictions ease,” NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said.

“So let’s give it a final push.”

Mr Perrottet’s call came after NSW recorded 222 new Covid-19 infections in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, as well as another four Covid-19 fatalities.

There are currently 254 people in NSW hospitals with Covid-19, with 42 of those in intensive care.

80 per cent national milestone

As a nation, Australia has also surpassed a significant vaccination milestone, with 80.6 per cent of Australians aged 16 and over now double vaccinated against Covid-19.

The statistics put Australian in the top tier in terms of Covid-19 vaccinations – a sharp turnaround from several months ago, when the country lagged behind most other OECD nations.

All Australians who have been double vaccinated are now eligible for a booster shot from six months after the date of their second jab.

For those with compromised immune systems, the waiting period for the third jab is two months.
